The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
