Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People using these medications must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
