Trump's Woke Alarm Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" policies pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
